Ethernet is the most popular technology in use in local area networks. The most commonly installed Ethernet system today, formerly called fast Ethernet, provides transmission speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Gigabit Ethernet provides even higher transmission speeds, at up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps).
