American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)
The primary set of codes used to represent characters in computer systems. ASCII uses a unique seven-bit pattern for each letter of the English alphabet, number between 0 and 9, or special character such as the asterisk.

UNIX systems. It supersedes an earlier 7-bit ASCII standard.
